James McCune Smith • Doctor James was born in N James McCune Smith • Doctor
James was born in New York in 1813, he attended the African Free School and graduated at the top of his class. His applications to various medical schools in the USA were rejected on racial grounds, so with the help of his community in New York he raised the funds to travel to Scotland and gained his BA, MA and Medical Doctorate from the University of Glasgow. He is remembered on the University campus in the name of the McCune Smith learning hub.

When he returned to New York in 1837 he opened a pharmacy and general practice that served all Americans, he also became Chief Physician at the New York City Colored Orphan Asylum and helped found the Radical Abolitionist Party.
He died in November 1865, just before the 13th amendment outlawed some forms of slavery in the US.

Absolutely beautiful morning in Glasgow, I don't o Absolutely beautiful morning in Glasgow, I don't often get here early enough to catch the sun on this side of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum but when I couldn't sleep decided to take my daily lockdown exercise early so got to see it looking like this.

Opened in 1901 Kelvingrove is home to a Spitfire, a Dali, and even a real Haggis!

The doors are closed right now, but they won't be forever, and when you do come to Glasgow I look forward to showing you round.
